Sailing Dictionary – the most important concepts to start with

Before you board, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with the basic terminology related to sailing. Here are selected terms that will help you better understand the yacht and how to handle it:

General terms

Sailing - a sport and form of recreation involving sailing yachts powered by the wind.

Course relative to the wind - the yacht's course relative to the wind direction, e.g., close-hauled, beam reach, broad reach. It determines how the sails should be set.

Body of water - any water area where one can sail – lake, bay, sea.

Crew - people on the yacht. This includes, among others: captain, watch officer, deckhand, and navigator.

Quay / dock - the place where the yacht is moored. A dock is either a floating or fixed platform.

Port - a harbor with docks, sanitation, electricity, water, and a harbor master's office, where yachts can stop.

Harbormaster's office - the port administration responsible for order, safety, and assigning mooring spots.

Terms related to yacht construction

Hull - the main part of the yacht that keeps the vessel afloat.

Deck - the upper surface of the yacht where the crew walks.

Side - The side of the yacht, left or right.

Bow - The front part of the yacht.

Stern - The back part of the yacht, where the cockpit is located.

Mast - a tall vertical structure that supports the sails. Thanks to the mast, the sails can catch the wind and propel the yacht.

Boom - a horizontal element of the rigging on which the mainsail is stretched. It facilitates the setting of the mainsail.

Mainsail - the main sail, attached behind the mast on the boom. It is responsible for most of the yacht's propulsion.

Jib - the front sail located in front of the mast.

Gennaker - a lightweight sail used in lighter and fuller winds (beam reach, broad reach). It is set from the front of the yacht.

Spinnaker - a large, convex sail set on downwind courses. Ideal in winds from the stern.

Cockpit - the working area for the crew and helmsman – this is where the steering wheel or tiller is located.

Rudder - an element used to steer the yacht. It can be a tiller or a steering wheel.

Rigging - Lines belonging to the yacht:

  • fixed – those that, for example, hold the mast. They are usually steel lines.

  • running – a significant portion of them is used to operate the sails.

Terms related to basic maneuvers

Tacking - A way of sailing upwind by going "zigzag" – once on one tack, once on the other.

Tack - The direction from which the yacht receives the wind:

  • port tack – wind from the left side,

  • starboard tack – wind from the right. This is important for the rules of right of way.

Jibe - A maneuver in which the yacht passes bow through the wind, changing tack. Used while sailing upwind.

Jibe - a maneuver in which the yacht passes stern through the wind, changing tack. Raising sails - the process of hoisting sails for use. Usually, the mainsail is raised first, then the jib.

Reefing - reducing sail area when the wind becomes too strong. It enables safe navigation.

Sailing brake - slowing down by adjusting the sails looser or partially lowering them.

Approach to the dock - maneuvering into port and stopping at the pier. One of the fundamental sailing skills.

Safety on the water – basic rules

Safety is the foundation of sailing etiquette. Regardless of experience level, remember to:

  • Life jacket and safety belt – mandatory equipment for every crew member,

  • Monitoring the weather – avoiding dangerous conditions; you can check the weather before the trip, for example, here,

  • Communication rules – both on board and with other vessels,

  • Emergency procedures – knowledge of signals and responses to threats,
