Are you planning a sailing adventure not only in the Masuria region, the Baltic Sea, but also in Greece, Croatia, or the Caribbean? One of the first common questions that arises is: will a Polish sailing license be sufficient? The answer is: in the vast majority of cases, yes! In this article, we will compare Polish and international sailing qualifications.
What is a sailing license?
A sailing license is an official document confirming qualifications to operate a sailing yacht. In Poland, they are issued by the Polish Yachting Association (PZŻ). Having the appropriate license is not only a legal requirement but also a confirmation of your skills and responsibility on the water.

Polish sailing licenses – an overview of the system
In Poland, there is a three-tier system of sailing qualifications:
Yacht sailor – the basic license, allowing the operation of yachts on inland waters or maritime waters within 2 nautical miles from shore during the day (sailing yachts with a hull length of up to 12 m)
Yacht captain – qualifications to operate sea yachts up to 18 m in length,
Yacht master – the highest qualifications, with no restrictions.
This system is defined in the Regulation of the Minister of Sport and Tourism dated April 9, 2013.

International sailing certificates – ISSA, RYA, and ICC
Polish sailing licenses are generally sufficient and accepted by charter companies in Europe – especially for recreational trips. However, it is worth remembering that there are countries and companies that may require other documents, but they belong to the minority. In such situations, international sailing certificates can be useful, providing a good complement to Polish qualifications.
RYA (Royal Yachting Association) – a British sailing certificate, widely recognized.
ISSA (International Sailing Schools Association) – a certificate popular in Europe, but it is not always recognized by officials and state services. It is worth keeping this in mind when planning to use this document in practice.
ICC (International Certificate of Competence) – a UN document (UNECE), which often builds on previous qualifications, such as RYA or ISSA.
Remember: Many certificates require holding a Polish license and appropriate experience.
Regardless of your choice, it is always worth ensuring what documents are required in a given country or by a charter company; in most cases, a Polish sailing license will be more than sufficient.

Which license to choose?
The choice of document depends on your sailing plans. For recreational sailing in Poland and most places abroad, a Polish sailing license is completely sufficient. It is a legal and widely accepted qualification that is ideal for most sailors.
If you plan to sail in countries that do not officially recognize the Polish sailing license, then, in addition to obtaining a Polish license, it is also worth considering acquiring a supplementary international certificate, such as ICC or RYA.

Summary
Polish sailing licenses are generally sufficient and widely accepted by charter companies, especially in Europe. For those planning recreational sailing both domestically and abroad, this is a practical, legal, and commonly recognized solution.
International certificates may be useful in certain regions, particularly those outside the European Union, but they are not essential in every case. Therefore, before embarking on a voyage, it is always wise to check the current regulations of the country and the charter company’s rules.
